The New Jersey OS/2 & Linux User Group was founded in 2003. It had been started more than 10 years earlier as the OS/2 SIG of the NJ PC Users Group, and had been subsequently expanded to include Linux/Unix and other OS variants.
Linux & Unix are now the dominant non-Microsoft operating systems, and include various Linux distributions as well as Mac OS X, which is based on BSD Unix. Althought IBM has dropped primary support of OS/2, OS/2 exists in its original form in a number of corporate environments, and has been kept alive and updated in a newer OS known as eComStation, by Serenity Systems.
We meet in Hackensack, NJ (Bergen County), convenient to Routes 4, 17 & 80, as well as the Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike and the George Washington Bridge. See the "Meetings" link for directions.
Please feel free to join us -- all are welcome!
Bring your computers! We have a wired and wireless (802.11g) network running at the meetings as well as ssh access to a running Linux server. Those with another OS can have access via a Linux shell. We have an SVGA compatible display screen for mutual viewing or presentations. This allows us to all work together when trying new things or going over the basics.
We have had interesting and educational meetings which include on-site installations of Linux on desktops and laptops, as well as dual- and multi-boot setups. We have covered Linux certification materials from IBM and others that have proven to be great reviews of the basics as well as good discussion materials. We have reviewed the latest eComStation (OS/2) offerings and some solutions running on OS/2. We will continue with structured and productive meetings, with topics including Linux, Unix, OS X, OS/2 and others - anything our members are interested in can be discussed, reviewed, and worked with, in a hands-on environment.
