I think I have to concede defeat. I don't see LFS happening in two days, and no one else really gave a solid distro to try. I'll have Slackware on my laptop, but I've been having trouble getting WiCD to get the wireless up and running.

You are so-o-o funny. I don't even think that that would finish compiling in the 48 hours that I'd have available. I'll try though, and I'll call my LFS distribution "Fedora 15" just for convenience. :)

Yeah, thanks for volunteering for this Murph. I would like to see a LFS install on your Macbook with a full Gnome 3 build and the current dev branch of Libre Office compiled.

If there is time, I'd like to do a quick presentation on researching and selecting Linux compatible hardware, particularly USB network adapters. Nothing large and well-scripted, just a quick overview, and interactive demonstration of the method that worked for me.

It is, Bridgewaters looks great, maybe carpooling from hackensack?

I have a buddy that runs Tcpdump I'm talking w/ him now about posting Linux articles from here to there. Bridgwaters would be less of a haul for him =D.

I've also checked at the Darress Theatre, and they have a room that seats 20-30 with a projector for $15/hr. Not free, but available.

Update:

We have received a very generous offer from someone interested in the open source community. I will bring this up at the next meeting for discussion. The location is in Bridgewater, NJ which is quite a distance away from Hackensack. Nonetheless, it is our only offer at the moment.

a. I think mailing lists, in our case would be the most efficient. There can be one for meeting announcements only (like we have now) and one for general group discussion. They are technically simple to participate in and every knows how to use email.

b. I like this too but identi.ca is limited in its 3rd party application implementation. It is pretty much limited to browser based participation. I suspect this will see very limited participation.

c. This seems so simple to use, like the mailing lists. Perhaps we just need to push it more and keep each other in the habit of frequenting the site.

d. Great idea, especially if the site is being used. However, one must get into the habit of utilizing RSS. I have never been a big RSS user. I mostly just frequest the sites themselves than hitting up the feed first. I could change that but it would take time to get used to.

e. Perhaps <a href="http://adventure.howstuffworks.com/survival/wilderness/how-to-send-smoke-signal.htm rel="nofollow">this</a> in binary?

Since the topic of communication has come up, I am convinced that our discussion forum is not worth keeping up. Thats for two reasons, first because it is not being used. I believe that we simply do not have enough members to develop a productive forum and there are better Linux community options for support than we can provide. Second is that the software I chose for the forum (bbPress) is lacking certain features and I have had to make extra effort to control spam and bogus user registration.

So as of today, I will drop that database and remove all references to our forum.

If in the future a forum looks viable, we can make another effort with a better software choice.

Cheers
