We have the private room reserved for us – The MD will direct you..

This month we’ll celebrate the season by inviting members from the other groups I organize making it an interesting and diverse gathering of various minds and interests …

If you have a computer, laptop or tablet with a problem – bring it along and we’ll help fix it. If you have video or audio equipment with a problem, bring that too and Santa will take a look …

We’ll work, talk and eat, drink* and be merry…
( detailed directions )

* If drinking, bring a designated driver or, better still, come on the bus or train – Nick will pick you up at ‘Wood Ridge’ station (eMail for details). You could also bring your private jet to Teterboro Airport as it’s nearby

–note from murph

If you folks wouldn’t mind, I have a presentation on Cloud computing that I’m working on that I’d like to run by folks and get some feedback. I’ll try to have it ironed out by then. Merry Christmas!

better than I’d previously thought.. No place to keep library or
for the northerners too..

Let me know if you’d rather not go there and I’ll keep looking.
Looked at several places (mainly restaurants) near Rt3 Clifton

Cool Beans, Oradell.
Verona Boat House, Verona ??
Launchpad Creatives, 97 Main Street Woodbridge, NJ
Elizabeth Library
Morris County Library
Clifton Library
Hackensack Community Center (Proposed, no details)
Edison, NJ (no details)
Discussed and dismissed at our last move, we can talk to NYI in Bridgewater.

Also, a few people have requested some sort of remote possibility for people that can’t make a meeting.

Google Meetup
Skype
mikogo.com

There are pros and cons to all of these that we should discuss.

Hopefully this will provide plenty of discussion for the upcoming meeting at Cool Beans in Oradell.

Hello:

Due to the hard work of +Nickalf B and the generosity of Converge, we’ve had a great place to meet for the last nine months. Unfortunately, Converge is no longer going to be there at Kean University, so we will no longer have that space available.

This is your chance to have a real impact on the group. Where would you like to meet? Do you have a place that seems great, but figured that there was no opportunity to bring it up? This is your chance!

Take a look around, see if you can find a location that would be suitable for the LUG to meet in. Someplace centrally located, preferably with a projector and network access. See if you can talk to the people that run the place, and find out if it is suitable.

We are really depending on YOU, the membership to help in this effort st that we will have a place to meet going forward.

Thanks,
–murph

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of going to Ohio Linuxfest. A yearly event in Columbus, it’s really a great place to see some talks, and get to know more people in the Linux community.

After a many-hour trip to get to Columbus marked by flooded roads and long detours, I got in to Columbus at about 6am. The Drury, the official hotel for the convention could not have possibly be more accommodating. I have to give them all the credit in the world, they have all of the amenities that you might want for a convention, like free breakfast, and free networking in the rooms, and on top of it, they were very generous, letting me check in in early after a long drive.

The convention itself was great, I particularly like the Friday keynote by Jon “Maddog” Hall on the 20th anniversary of the Linux kernel. His perspective on the events that lead us to where we are today is always fascinating.

I also particularly like the Saturday Keynote by Bradley Khun on the issue of Free software in a “Cloud” services world. It brought a lot if issues regarding loading proprietary software from service providers through your browser in an otherwise Free Software desktop.

I attended many other talks, but I’m going to leave the details to all of you, as the audio from the talks should be available from ohiolinux.org in the near future.

I also made it a point to be a bit more social, and not try to attend EVERY talk that I found interesting, and try to get out and talk to more people. I always like getting together with the Linux Link Tech Show crew, of whom Allan, Joel, Linc and Dave Yates were in attendance. I also got to meet Tracy Holz and Steven McLaughlin (aka Door-to-Door Geek) There were also a number of people like Klaatu, and monsterb who I know from conventions and online, but whose real names I don’t know.

All in all, the convention is a great time, my only regret is the lack of time to catch up with everybody, I had a commitment for a motorcycle run on Sunday, so I had to leave far too early.

If anyone has questions about the convention, please email me, or bring it up at the meeting this Wednesday!

I’m back from Ohio Linux Fest, and I have brought back a whole lot of swag to give away for Software Freedom day. I have 20 Ubuntu discs, 22 Fedora and 28 SuSe based Gnome 3 trial discs. I also have a bunch of stickers from Gnome, the Free Software Foundation, and Fedora. I also have a stack of literature from the EFF. I also have an Ubuntu disc that I won from the Linux Link Tech show crew, and a Fedora book to give away. I also have a large number of Software Freedom Day and Fedora balloons that I have to look into getting helium inflated for Saturday.

I’m working on some copies to “The Open Disc” to give away, and I’m also going to make more copies of the Open Culture Disc that we discussed at the last meeting.

I’m going to head out today to put up some flyers around Montclair. I put some up in Boonton last week, and they are all now gone. I’ll try again, and see how they do.

Anyone else having luck with preparations?

Edit: Here is the link to our page on the Software Freedom Day site: Any suggestions on updates would be welcome.

I hope that everyone brings good ideas for Software Freedom Day!

I’ve gotten Ubuntu CDs as well as a nice banner, stickers, balloons, and stickers for the upcoming Software Freedom Day!

I’ll print out some flyers with tear-offs for people to distribute, and hope to hear from some of you on what you might want to demo, or what else you might want to do at our SFD table in Montclair on September 17th.

Hopefully we can get some good discussion going at the meeting, as well as on the lists.

Looking forward to some feedback!

I’ve also been thinking, Software Freedom Day is approaching fast! We only have two meetings before September 17th. If everyone can put some thought to a location that we can use for a SFD demonstration, we really need to discuss and take action on this FAST!

I started to register, but did not have a location to put in yet.

http://www.softwarefreedomday.org

The two locations that I presented a few months ago turn out to be very expensive, and the deadlines have passed already.

I hope to hear from some of you this Wednesday.

Hello Luggers!

So far, I’m unaware of an upcoming topic for this month’s meeting on Wednesday, June the 29th.

I was out walking, listening to Linux podcasts, and got an idea. How about YOU pick a distribution that you’d like to see, and I’ll install it, and bring it to this upcoming Wednesday’s meeting so that everyone can take a look at it.

If there’s another plan for the meeting, I’ll happily set this aside, but otherwise, the offer is open.

So if anyone will send a message to either the njlunux-discussion, or the meetup.com mailing lists
with the distro that you’d like to see, and I’ll tally them up, and try to install (and get working) the most popular one.

I’ll call an end to the voting at 5pm on Sunday, to give me a little time to get it working.

Suggestions? Slackware, Ubuntu 11.04, Fedora 15, Linux Mint?

And now, a few words from our location sponsor.

As many of you know, we meet at a new venue where, for no
fee, we have full use of their facility (don’t forget, unlike
Mike, they are not LUG members) so, out of decency, we need to
keep them informed as to how many members are coming and also if
‘none’ are going. Having them set up the room and staying late to
accommodate us and no one shows could endanger our relationship
with them, so ‘PLEASE’ let us know if you are coming or not by
clicking http://NJLinux.com/Directions and RSVPing Yea or Na.
Here you will also see clear directions on the new location.
